North County Transit District's San Diego Coaster train travels along the Pacific Ocean from downtown San Diego to Oceanside, providing excellent connections all along the way.

WHY USE SAN DIEGO COASTER TRAIN?

From Oceanside to San Diego, the Coaster takes just over an hour. Throughout the route, there are eight stations, with breathtaking views.

 

On weekends, NCTD Coaster runs 20 trains, giving easy, reliable access to nearly all of San Diego's coastline. From North County, passengers would travel along the line to the city and nearby employment centers via commuter trains. Tourists and those who don't like to drive will also enjoy it.

 

Depending on what you'd like to do today, it makes it convenient and simple to travel in and out of the city. Traveling is easier this way, so riders can enjoy themselves more.

The San Diego Trolley connects two stations with local bus routes, further expanding options into nearby areas. For more information, consult the websites of each station.

 

There are Customer Service Centers, located at most stations, as well as vending machines throughout the system.

 

With the Pronto Card, users can also transfer easily between the Trolley and bus networks. If you are using a Pronto Card, you can load it at the kiosk or on the app and tap the pad when boarding the train. If you want to avoid overcharging, make sure you tap after the ride.

 

For a roundtrip of the entire length, fares are only $13, and shorter trips are much less expensive. For frequent travelers, day passes and monthly passes are available. In addition, each fare includes a free transfer within two hours from activation to Breeze commuter shuttle (in Sorrento Valley) or Escondidos Sprinter light rail (in Oceanside). In certain situations, the fare may also apply to Amtrak rides along the same route.

 

SORRENTO VALLEY

A commuter station serves in Sorrento Valley as a link between homes and industries. It is not a popular tourist destination, and there are only a few small shops near the tracks that cater to workers on lunch breaks.

 

It is possible to get to Miramar and Torrey Pines by bus using the Breeze or the MTS bus service from the station. Most visitors can appreciate the views down Rose Canyon from this station, however.

A temporary NCTD station is located alongside the Del Mar Fairgrounds, situated between the Sorrento Valley and Solana Beach stations.

 

SOLANA BEACH

While approaching Solana Beach from the south, the Coaster passes within inches of the cliffs of Del Mar, the most scenic portion of its length. The best seat to enjoy the view is the left seat on the northbound train (right seat on the southbound train).

 

ENCINITAS

Encinitas station, like the one at Solana Beach, opens onto the 101 in an area filled with California-inspired shops, restaurants, and bars. Beyond that, tourists and locals will find several attractions to enjoy.

 

The city preserves the San Diego Botanic Gardens, the Flower Capital of the World. A wonderful place to enjoy nature along the coast, it's one of the nicest.

 

San Dieguito Historical Museum, which exhibits much of Encinitas' past, is located right outside the gardens. Atop the bluffs just south of town, west of the tracks, stands the Self-Realization Fellowship. Throughout the Pacific Ocean, followers of this religion maintain an extensive series of meditation gardens, which are open to the public.

 

If you're looking for an active adventure, the beaches nearby are perfect for surfing and stand-up paddle boarding. Manchester Preserve and San Elijo Lagoon, both of which require a brief ride from the station, are excellent hiking spots farther inland.

 

CARLSBAD POINSETTIA

There are larger attractions in Carlsbad that can be reached from this stop. You can easily reach Flower and Strawberry Fields, Lego Land, Sea Life Aquarium, and the quirky Green Dragon Tavern and Museum from downtown via bus, bike, or rideshare. Last but not least, this brewery houses an odd collection of Revolution-era Americana.

 

Near the station are several shops and beach access. It serves mostly commuters and tourists, however.

 

OCEANSIDE

 

 

 

Oceanside is the last (or first) stop on the San Diego Coaster. Fun things to do and a charming little town make this town a great vacation spot.
